Oberlin’s Adam J. Lewis Center for Environmental Studies (AJLC) was envisioned as an integrated building/landscape system that would demonstrate important concepts from the Environmental Studies curriculum. One of the most innovative building experiments in the United States, the 13,600 square foot AJLC was designed with the goal of generating more energy than it consumes—a “net zero” building that mimics the closed-loop cycles of nature’s ecosystems and provides beautiful, functional spaces for classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, and an auditorium. Bill Browning was involved with several stages of the project, providing technical consulting, reviewing energy use and project designs, helping with architect selection, and participating in brainstorming sessions.
