Terrapin partner and co-founder Bill Browning has received the 2015 National Design for Humanity Award, presented by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). This award is given in recognition of Bill’s trailblazing work in environmental design, most notably his research and implementation of biophilic design. Bill has dedicated much of his professional career to improving the health and well-being of individuals by connecting the natural and built environments.
Among other accomplishments, Bill was a peer reviewer for the WELL Building Standard® and a co-author of Terrapin’s report 14 Patterns of Biophilic Design, which articulates relationships between nature, human biology, and the built environment as 14 patterns of biophilic design for healthful design implementation. He also co-authored a Terrapin report, The Economics of Biophilia, which lays out the economic benefits of implementing biophilic design in healthcare facilities, schools, offices, retail spaces, and communities. Besides these publications, Bill has helped numerous clients such as Clif Bar create healthful, restorative spaces using biophilic design.
The ASID National Awards represent the Society’s highest level of professional recognition. The awards primarily recognize a body of work created over the course of a career rather than a specific member achievement. The ASID Design for Humanity Award celebrates an individual or institution for having significantly contributed to improving the environment for humanity through design-related activities or projects that transform lives.
