Experience:

Grand Wailea Hotel and Resort

The 42-acre Grand Wailea derives over 60% of its business from conventions and is one of the largest users of energy and water in Maui. Spurred by Interface Inc.'s 1997 global meeting, which brought over 1,000 guests to the resort, Bill Browning and the Interface Green Team worked with hotel management to minimize the environmental impact of the conference. The initiative began with a comprehensive audit covering the hotel’s operations, building performance, energy, water use, and solid waste. During the six-day conference, utility use and waste were tracked daily and reported back to the conference participants, offering a sense of personal effectiveness as well as the cumulative impact of institutional change. As a result of implementing strategic changes, the Grand Wailea achieved a 22% reduction in energy use, a 50% decrease in landfill waste, and several hundred thousand dollars of annual water savings through a systems retrofit and modified landscaping practices (which also reduced pesticide use by 95%). Since the Interface initiative, the Grand Wailea has become the first Five Diamond resort to achieve a Globe HVS Ecotel® rating.
