Experience:

National Museum of the American Indian

Bill Browning provided environmental consulting services on the design of the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of the American Indian, the first national museum in the United States dedicated to celebrating the history of indigenous cultures from the Americas and Hawai‘i. Situated adjacent to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the Museum is surrounded by wetlands constructed to mimic the region’s native landscape and channel stormwater to passively irrigate the grounds. The building’s golden exterior is constructed of 450 million year old Kasota limestone that curves around the building referencing the natural erosion of rock formations. Designed to face due east, the building opens into the Potomac Rotunda – a grand space that reaches five-stories in height and is flexibly designed to accommodate frequent performances. Tall windows aligned with the Equinox bring natural light into circulation spaces and views of the rising and setting sun.
