Experience:

Starwood Hotels

Working with the design team and brand managers of Starwood Hotels, a major international hospitality corporation, Terrapin applied concepts of whole-systems thinking and creative mechanical engineering to analyze the client’s ELEMENT hotel prototype design and identify opportunities to optimize building performance. The resulting set of guidelines for hotel design, construction, operations, and maintenance, along with both guest and worker education initiatives will make this the first American hospitality corporation to launch a comprehensive, worldwide brand of ‘green’ hotels. To support this global endeavor, strategies are tailored to five different climates -- cold, mixed-humid, hot-dry/mixed-dry, hot-humid, and tropical. In addition to decreasing the new hotels’ environmental impact, the recommended strategies will translate into cost-saving paybacks in the form of reduced energy bills and potentially expedited permitting. Detailed Terrapin Case Studies are available in the Workroom, our private extranet full of detailed information and resources to help you make an informed decision.
